Rockumentarian Sam Dunn
Sam Dunn is a musician and anthropologist turned filmmaker, a rockumentarian if you will. Being a fan of heavy metal music since the age of 12, Dunn, along with friend Scot McFadyen he directed and starred in the heavy metal music documentary titled, Metal – A Headbanger’s Journey in 2005. The follow up to that was, Global Metal
released in 2008. His next project was to co-write and co-direct the epic Iron Maiden film, Iron Maiden: Flight 666
released in 2009.
Prior to the Iron Maiden film, Dunn and McFadyen had begun a documentary on legendary Canadian rockers Rush, but scheduling opportunities (like an Iron Maiden tour being launched) forced Dunn to put Rush on the back burner. With Flight 666 on film and in the can, the Rush was project was back on.
The film will be the first to reveal the inner workings of one of the world’s most enduring rock bands and will engage both die-hard Rush fans and general music lovers. The documentary examines the history of Canada’s best-known rock band. It delivers the first in-depth portrait of Geddy Lee (bass/vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar) and Neil Peart (drums) tracing their musical evolution and personal struggles from when they first picked up their instruments, through their early tours with Kiss and Aerosmith all the way to their Billboard chart topping Snakes And Arrows album and tour.
According to Rushisaband.com, in the most recent issue of Prog, they learned several more details regarding the documentary including the fact that the release will not likely occur until next summer. In one portion of the interview they talk about how they shot some video interviews of Neil Peart while biking with him through Quebec, parts of Europe and California. There are several behind-the-scenes photos from these Neil Peart interview shoots along with a few other miscellaneous pics posted on the Banger Films (Scot and Sam’s production company) website.
It’s about time Rush gets some respect, after all, they are the greatest progressive hard rock band EVER! I can’t wait for this film to come out.
