Where’s That Confounded DVD?

Jimmy Page at the Ahmet Ertegun Benefit

On December 10th, 2007 a historical rock music event took place. The legendary band, Led Zeppelin played a one time concert for the Ahmet Ertegun Benefit at the 02 Arena in London. It was so big and so in demand that one million, that’s right, one million people tried to get tickets for the 20,000 seat venue. The first day tickets went on sale the website that was offering them crashed.

Zeppelin wanted to get this one right

Unlike previous reunion shows, the band took this one very seriously. According to Led Zeppelin, the main reason for the reunion concert was to make up for several slipshod, unrehearsed reunion sets that they’ve played over the past three decades. In an issue of Rolling Stone the group saluted Jason Bonham, who filled in for his late father John Bonham on drums at the gig.

Jason Bonham

Jason Bonham

Bonham, said that he feels a duty to pay tribute to his dad, as well as to make up for what he felt was a lazy performance on his part during Zeppelin’s 1988 set at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary Concert in New York City. Bonham says that he was too young to properly rise to the occasion of filling his father’s shoes that night, recalling, “I took it for granted. I expected it and didn’t do my homework.”

John Paul Jones says that nearly 20 years after their last prolonged set together, Bonham has more than done his homework: “Jason has an encyclopedic recall of every live bootleg and studio outtake… Jason will go, ‘In 1971, you did it this way, and in 1973, at so-and-so auditorium, you did it this way into that.”

Page added that, “Jason knows the numbers. But not only that, he understands them. That makes a lot of difference.”

Okay, we get it, the band rehearsed extensively and wanted to get this show right. Who knows maybe this would be their final reunion show and they wanted to go out on top, leave us with the memory of a concert that was epic. The problem is only 20,000 people got to see it, when their were millions more that didn’t. From what I have heard it was a brilliant performance.

All that glitters turns to gold

Robert Plant at the Ahmet Ertegun Benefit

Plant, Page and Jones have to know they are sitting on a gold mine. How long does post production take? It has been over two years.

Speaking at an awards ceremony in London, both guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones said that they expected the concert to become available.

“I hope so one day, yeah,” Page told BBC 6Music.

Although Jones echoed Page’s sentiment, he said that at the moment “there is no hurry” to release it.

No hurry, last time I checked, Page is 65 and Jones is 63. The clock is ticking and these guys are not getting any younger. So where is that confounded DVD?

Watch the video’s of other Led Zeppelin reunions below, and you have to think to yourself, if I were Jimmy Page or Robert Plant I would want to release the 02 London show ASAP so people would forget these horrible performances.

If Led Zeppelin is not going to tour because Robert Plant is out doing that crap with Allison Krauss then at least give us the 02 Arena reunion concert on DVD.

Does anybody know what’s going on with it? Has anyone heard anything?

I have seen the bootleg and You Tube stuff from the show, and its really great! I can’t, however, blame Plant for not wanting to tour extensively with the band… At a certain age, its just nearly impossible for him to sing the way he did way back when. The Allison Krause stuff fits for him now, but its somewhat interesting and yet not very fulfilling for ZEP fans!
