Aerosmith Saga ‘Will The Train Keep A Rollin’

Aerosmith Saga ‘Will The Train Keep A Rollin’

I have to tell you this latest chapter in the story of Aerosmith is pretty bizarre. The band was roaring along doing a big 2009 summer concert tour with ZZ Top, when on June 28th 2009, Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler apparently pulled a leg muscle, forcing the band to postpone and reschedule numerous shows, no big deal, shit happens.

Crash and Burn at Sturgis

Then while the band was performing at the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota on August 5th, 2009, the 61 year old singer fell off the stage during a performance of the song ‘Love in an Elevator.’ As the crew were fixing an equipment problem, Tyler continued to entertain the crowd,  spinning around, he fell off the stage (see video below) injuring his head, neck, and breaking his shoulder forcing the band to cancel the rest of the tour.

Then things started to heat up when Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry  publicly vented his anger and frustration with Tyler for not communicating with him or other members of the band. Perry was telling anyone that would listen that “Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with.”

“Steven quit, as far as I can tell,” Perry had earlier told the Las Vegas Sun. “I don’t know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely, or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know.”

Perry’s comments came on the heels of an interview with British magazine Classic Rock, in which the front man discussed his previously announced solo project. Said Tyler, “I don’t know what I’m doing yet, but it’s definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself  — Brand Tyler.”

Aerosmith breaking up? Maybe not.

Joe Perry Project

Joe Perry Project

Things seemed to be cooling off a bit and it looked like maybe the break up of Aerosmith wasn’t inevitable. During the hiatus of the band, Perry was on tour with his own band The Joe Perry Project in support of his first solo record in four years titled ‘Have Guitar, Will Travel’ when during a gig at New York’s Fillmore at the Irving Plaza on November 10th, 2009 he got a surprise visit from Tyler who joined the band on stage and claimed, “I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith. Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I … am the rainbow!” Tyler then joined the Joe Perry Project for a rendition of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way.”

Then on December 23rd, 2009 Tyler admitted himself to rehab for an addiction to prescription painkillers, which is sad because you would think with all that Steven has been through over the years that he would never fall off the wagon again. At this point though it seemed Aerosmith would continue with it’s legendary singer once he got cleaned up and out of rehab. At least Steven thinks so. Tyler said he’s eager to return to work with his band mates.

“I love Aerosmith; I love performing as the lead singer in Aerosmith. I am grateful for all of the support and love I am receiving and am committed to getting things taken care of.”

New year, same old song and dance saga.

As of January 30th, 2010 Tyler is said to have completed 30 days of “intensive sobriety treatment” in a California rehabilitation clinic and is now undergoing a 90-day “residential day treatment program” which gives him the freedom to leave the facility grounds.

Tyler has been spotted in the Palm Desert area in recent weeks and on January 23 he showed up at a Home Depot hardware market and sang two Aerosmith songs over the store’s P.A. system. Tyler also showed up at a Palm Desert karaoke bar and belted out the Aerosmith ballad “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”

In the meantime while Tyler is doing his thing, Perry is doing his, which is interviewing Aerosmith’s next singer. Lenny Kravitz was rumored to be Tyler’s replacement but commented he would never take over for Tyler.

Paul Rodgers

Paul Rodgers

At last November’s Classic Rock Roll of Honor Awards in England, legendary singer Paul Rodgers of Bad Company and Queen fame met Perry. According to reports Perry said he’d long admired Rodgers as a vocalist, and mentioned Aerosmith were having trouble with Steven’s erratic behavior. Joe got right to the point and asked Rodgers whether he’d be interested in singing for Aerosmith, but after all the “I’m really flattered” rederick, Rodgers said he was committed to the reunion of Bad Company, so singing in Aerosmith wouldn’t be possible.”

Next stop, the Rebel Rocker.

Rebel rocker Billy Idol is rumored to be the next singer in Perry’s sights, and a meeting with the band was scheduled, but apparently Idol was a no show due to illness. Might not want to replace one problem with another Joe.

Now it’s not clear if Perry and the boys in Aerosmith are looking for a temporary or permanent replacement for Tyler, but they are looking.

Steven has launched the latest barb in this war of egos by having his attorney send Aerosmith a letter telling them to stop looking for a new singer and allow him to recover from what ails him so he can rejoin the band.

I think Joe has either lost his mind or is totally fucking with Steven by his latest comment that he would consider a female singer to front Aerosmith. If he is serious he has lost his mind. Now I know Steven can look pretty feminine with his choice of outfits sometimes but he definitely doesn’t sing like a chick.

Note to Aerosmith, there is only one Steven Tyler and he can’t be replaced, temporarily or permanently, so stop looking. It’s not fair to the fans you will be charging full price for tickets and it’s not fair to Steven, last time I checked he is still alive and kicking and has said he wants to continue singing for Aerosmith once he gets healthy. So take a temporary permanent vacation and wait for Steven.

Maybe this has turned into some big publicity stunt, who knows.
