Having an older brother turn me on to this incredible music (Hard Rock and Heavy Metal) that I love so much has allowed me the opportunity to discover amazing bands that weren’t necessarily main stream acts but none the less just as good or even better than the bands that got regular rotation on rock radio, Captain Beyond was definitely one of those bands. Captain Beyond was and still is some of the best Progressive Hard Rock music I have ever heard and the bands drummer, Bobby Caldwell is one of my all time favorite masters of the skins. Bobby Caldwell born October 6th, 1951 started playing at a very young age (around 10 years old) and at the age of 14 soon found himself involved with a local Tampa, Florida band called Noah’s Ark that signed with Decca Records. Noah’s Ark found some local success but Bobby’s first big break came at the age of 19 when he was asked to join Blues/Rock legend Johnny Winter and his group called Johnny Winter And. Bobby toured with Johnny Winter And extensively around the world and a live performance from an East coast show was caught on tape and released in 1971 as Johnny Winter And Live. Bobby also toured with the Allman Brothers Band and can be heard playing drums and percussion on their historic album, The Allman Brothers, Live at the Filmore East. While playing with these legendary bands, Bobby had a different kind of music in his head, a vision of something more aggressive and progressive, something that would really allow him to incorporate his ideas of what rock music should sound like and Captain Beyond was just the band to achieve that. The Revolver Golden Gods Awards will be broadcast on VH1 Classic on May 22. Revolver will release its Golden Gods issue of the magazine on May 11. A Finnish band called Amoral that was well known as a death metal band with typical guttural growling for vocals (something I cannot listen to) did a complete 180 degree turn for their fourth album and enlisted the services of an accomplished vocalist in Ari Koivunen. The record titled, ‘Show Your Colors‘ is amazing, and I am now a fan of the band. Posted below is a video of the song ‘Leave Your Dead Behind‘ with original singer, Niko Kalliojärvi, and then two video’s of the songs, ‘Year of the Sucker Punch‘ and ‘Gave Up Easy‘ with new singer, Ari Koivunen. What a difference, what do you think of the bands new direction? After three accomplished technical death metal albums, 2004’s ‘Wound Creations‘, 2005’s ‘Decrowning‘ and 2007’s ‘Reptile Ride‘ and three extensive European tours, Amoral had to endure the loss of their vocalist Niko Kalliojärvi, who left the band due to his diminished motivation which may or may not have had something to do with the musical direction the band was moving to. The more melodic side of Amoral’s songwriting reared its head already on Reptile Ride in songs like Snake Skin Saddle and Mute, but it is only now, on their 4th outing Show Your Colors, that the curve balls have become the main course. <h4>Change for the better</h4> While the change became imminent, why wouldn’t they go all the way? Next thing you know, Amoral rocked the boat by enlisting the services of Ari Koivunen, the one and only Idols talent show winner in the Universe who has won the show singing heavy metal and hard rock standards. While maybe upsetting some of the band’s old fans, the entry of Koivunen, who himself has released a Double Platinum selling debut album and another that exceeded the Gold limit, is sure as taxes and death, to raise the Helsinki rockers to the lips of a wider audience. <div id="attachment_3364" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 139px"><img class="size-full wp-image-3364" title="Amoral Show Your Colors" src="http://rockchoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Amoral-Show-Your-Colors.jpg" alt="Amoral Show Your Colors" width="129" height="129" />Show Your Colors</div> In musical terms the band’s 4th album is an about-turn, replacing the dominance of quirky death metal with an exemplary display of riff-driven, heavy, yet melodic power groove and the occasional sing-along chorus, thus owing in equal measures to the likes of Skid Row and Pantera. The change doesn’t end with vocals and style, though, ‘Show Your Colors‘ is also the recording debut for Amoral’s new bassist [...] Finnish Death Metal band 'Amoral' switched gears and took the 'death' out of their metal with a new lead singer and a new album. After releasing their debut album, ‘Wolf‘ back in 2000, the band toured relentlessly and destroyed the major festivals, gaining them more and more followers and success. In 2002, the album ‘Black Wings‘ saw the light of day and songs like ‘Venom’ and ‘Genocide’ quickly became live favorites, and still are to this day. After touring with the likes of <a title="Saxon Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxon_%28band%29" target="_blank">Saxon</a>, <a title="Nocturnal Rites Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocturnal_Rites" target="_blank">Nocturnal Rites</a>, <a title="Edguy Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edguy" target="_blank">Edguy</a> and many more, Wolf set out to write and record the album that would set them apart from others in their genre by developing their own sound even further towards metallic excellence. <div id="attachment_2413" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 160px"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-2413" title="Wolf Evil Star" src="http://rockchoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Wolf-Evil-Star-150x150.jpg" alt="Evil Star" width="150" height="150" />Evil Star</div> The album, ‘Evil Star‘, was released in 2004 and with the help of the title track, along with the video for ‘Wolf’s Blood’ (see video below) the band grabbed the attention of metal media and die-hard heavy metal fans around the world. Wolf became a rising star purely by their tenacity and love for their music. Not to mention the brilliance of their musical talent. The success of ‘Evil Star‘ brought the band to the USA for the second time in their career. In 2005, Wolf’s success gained the interest of Century Media Records who released the 2006 album ‘The Black Flame’. In support of this new effort, Wolf hit the road with the likes of <a title="The Haunted Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Haunted" target="_blank">The Haunted</a>, <a title="Trivium Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trivium_%28band%29" target="_blank">Trivium</a> and <a title="Municipal Waste Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Municipal_Waste_%28band%29" target="_blank">Municipal Waste</a> among others, as well as conquered such festivals as Sweden Rock Festival (which was recorded and aired by Swedish national radio), Bang Your Head, Bloodstock UK, Headbanger’s Open Air and more. <div id="attachment_2426" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 209px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2426" title="Wolf" src="http://rockchoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Wolf-199x300.jpg" alt="Wolf" width="199" height="300" />Wolf</div> The video for the track ‘I Will Kill Again’ achieved regular rotation on many TV stations; at least after director Owe Lingvall had created a censored version because the original had way too much blood! Launched on VH1 Classic November 15th, 2008 the show is in it’s fourth season on the air. <h4>Metalheads Unite</h4> That Metal Show is co-hosted by Radio DJ and rock and metal music aficionado Eddie Trunk along with comedians and Metalheads Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson. Eddie Trunk, known as the straight man on the show is a walking encyclopedia of rock knowledge which is put to the test on every episode with a segment called ‘Stump The Trunk’ where the studio audience asks rock and metal related trivia questions to test his knowledge. Long time friends Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine who have collaborated on various projects such as the Comedy Central series ‘Meet The Creeps,’ released a series of prank call CD’s called ‘Terrorizing Telemarketers’ and have made several appearances on and contributed to the Howard Stern Show, handle the lighter side of That Show Metal. <div id="attachment_4750" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 180px"><img class="size-full wp-image-4750" title="Don Jamieson" src="http://rockchoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Don-Jamieson.jpg" alt="Don Jamieson" width="170" height="255" />Don Jamieson</div> The chemistry on the show relies on the hilarious (and sometimes mean spirited) banter between the three co-host’s, which is always fun and sometimes informative. It’s not uncommon for the three of them to knock each others taste in music, clothing or hair styles – which makes for a fun half hour. <h4>Metal Royalty Appears On Every Show</h4> That Metal Show always features guest appearances by some of the biggest names in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music including; Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of RUSH, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio and Geezer Butler of Heaven and Hell. It’s a very impressive list and I can’t wait to see who they bring out next season. Along with the ‘Stump The Trunk’ segment, they also have ‘The Throw Down’ where two similar musicians or bands are brought up and pitted against one another in a heated, but fun debate between the guest and hosts (the studio audience making the final decision). They also tell us ‘Whatever Happened To…’ regarding a musician or band, and a quick feature telling us about a new record, book or website regarding Hard Rock and Metal music. Comedian and Hard Rock/Heavy Metal fan Don Jamieson is co-host of the show and recently spoke with me about his comedy career and involvement with the show.
