Big Four Concert Coming To A Theater Near You

Big 4 Of Metal

OVER 450 U.S. THEATERS IN MORE THAN 140 U.S. MARKETS TO EXHIBIT CONCERT EVENT TO FANS TICKETS TO GO ON SALE STARTING TODAY, FRIDAY, MAY 21ST

The “Big Four”, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax are bringing their historic European tour to the global stage by beaming the event via satellite to movie theaters around the world in a special HD cinematic event. These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980’s to dominate the metal world, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. Despite huge demand, these musical giants have never shared the same stage until now.

The legendary June 22nd concert from the tour’s stop of the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria will air the same day in 450 theaters in over 140 markets in the U.S., as well as beamed into theaters in Europe, Canada and Latin America. Delayed screenings are planned in Australia, South A frica and New Zealand.

Tickets for “The Big Four: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax” go on sale starting today Friday, May 21st in the U.S. and internationally starting Friday, May 28th at participating theater box offices and at www.thebigfourlive.com,  see the event cinema trailer below.

In December 2009, the bands announced that they would be joining forces to take part in the traveling Sonisphere Festival for only 7 shows across Europe. Now, this one-time only event from the Sofia show makes it possible for fans far and wide to participate in what otherwise is a very limited run of dates. The high-definition concert presentation will memorialize the event and the impact will be amplified globally with the cinema screenings, making the dreams of fans around the world over become a reality.

Lars Ulrich of Metallica says of this historic announcement,

“Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s Big Four would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theater near you in High Definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!”

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says,

“Damn, as if this Big 4 tour wasn’t exciting enough now we get to be on the big screen worldwide! Metal at the movies, two big horns up! It is unbelievably gratifying that this means so much to the metal community around the globe. Get your tix, grab some popcorn and get ready to bang your head!”

Declares Slayer’s Kerry King,

“I can’t believe someone didn’t make this happen 15 years ago! The fans finally get what they want. I think it’s awesome!”

Says Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine,

“The magnitude of this event hasn’t really sunk in yet, and I am thrilled to know that people around the planet will be able to walk into a movie theater and experience the greatest line up of Heavy Metal in the history of the world!”

The Big Four: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax” digital cinema event is distributed globally by New York-based BY Experience.

Tickets for the one night only event are available now at presenting U.S. theater box offices and online at www.thebigfourlive.com. Tickets go on sale internationally from Friday, May 28th. Ok, I knew it wouldn’t be the same as a real concert, so I wasn’t expecting a lot. Which is good, and the reason I had a good time.

    But,… there were flaws.

I definitely misunderstood the “live” aspect. I thought it was going to be a live stream of the actual concert as it was taking place.
Nope. It was a pre-recorded and edited film of the concert.

    The bands:
Anthrax was first. I had never seen them before and didn’t know their music. They did a good job, though. I got into them, and my friend who does know them said they did a good job. They had not their original singer, but one of their most popular singers from over the years (according to my friend). They were good.

    Megadeth was next.
Hands down, they played the best set from an instrumental standpoint. They were tight, and absolutely ripped through their songs. They had great song choices, too. The sound quality was also excellent. You could hear every player perfectly. No one was drowned out (unlike Slayer..)
However! (And this is a really BIG however). Dave Mustaine’s voice was gone. And I mean gone. He could growl the low parts fine. But, the song choices they played almost all required singing in the higher register, which Dave couldn’t do. He had to rely on a falcetto voice and literally sounded like a little girl singing. It was absolutely embarassing to watch. Everyone in the audience cringed every time Dave attempted to sing. Basically, we just wanted them to perform an instrumental set. That’s how bad Dave’s voice was.
Hopefully his voice was just tired out from touring. If that’s what’s left of his voice, though, that’ll be the end of Megadeth.
And it’s really too bad, too, because instrumentally they were phenomenal, including Dave.

    Slayer was up next.
Ok, I have to preface this by admitting that I don’t really care for Slayer’s music. I’ve never really gotten into them. So, this is probably a biased review. Oh, well.
First, I actually liked their set, from a performance point of view. The basist seemed to be enjoying the show and it made the performance enjoyable to watch. (I still don’t like their music, though).
On the negative side, though, the sound quality was terrible for Slayer’s set. It was difficult to hear the lead guitar work, and the rhythm parts kind of bled into each other. King was fun to watch. Hanamon, however, was annoying. And he played the same, zero creativity solo, over and over and over. Boring! (Ok, there’s my bias coming in. Sorry about that.)
To be fair, all of the Slayer fans in the audience thought they were awesome, so I guess I’ll leave it at that.

    Last up was Metallica.
Actually, this was not their best performance. I’ve seen them live 4 times. Kirk was definitely cold in the beginning of the show. He was off-tempo (falling behind the beat several times) and a bit sloppy. The band was not tight. They were sort of ad-libbing a bit, which works for the Dead or Fish, but not too well for Metallica. They got better about half-way through the set and by the end Kirk was back on his game. But, still, a little disappointing. The other major disappointment was the set list. They did, if I remember correctly, 3 slow tunes. After 3 preceding bands who did nothing but fast and heavy, for Metallica to come out during the 4th and final hour of the concert and do 3 slow tunes started to put people to sleep. (The Slayer fans got up and left. Lol )
But, otherwise, overall, it was a good performance. Not their best by a long shot, though.

Oh, and there was one little surprise near the end which I won’t reveal. Nothing too amazing, but kind of neat.

In the end, it was about what I expected for a movie-theatre showing of a filming of a concert. It would have much cooler if it had actually been a live feed of the concert, because that would have gone a long way to pulling the movie audience into the experience (and would have helped to overcome some of the flaws). But, in the end, $19 for a pretty fun night out to listen to 4 hours of music is not bad.

So, 3 out of 5 stars.
